If I had to choose a word, to sum up 2020 it would be disastrous. I am happy 2020 is over and I ready to welcome 2021. This year I am claiming a year of success and change. So my 2021 word of the year is consistency.
Picking a word of the year
Some say how you spend the first day of the year will determine how the rest of the year will be.
Me on the other hand I like to believe that a year can turn into whatever you make it. In the end, it’s all perspective. For 2021 I decided to pick a word of the year that will not only keep me motivated but will also keep me focused.
Picking a word of the year calls for some goal setting for the new year. Since January is the month of new beginnings and resolutions I feel that the time now is the perfect time to be intentional and really map out where I am now and where I want to be by the end of the year.
Why I picked my word of the year
For this year my word is consistency because consistency is something I really struggled with within 2020. And because of that, I want to make sure I eat, breathe, and live with consistency.
I know for a fact that if I am able to be more consistent I can achieve so much more success. Dedicating my entire self completely to a task, activity, or goal is what is going to not only help me grow personally but will also help me further grow as a blogger.
Consistency will help me to stay fully engaged with my blog and readers without distraction. Allowing me to write and produce new content regularly and steadily.
I know that if I am consistent with my work I will see great results within my blog this year. That is something that 2020 taught me. I even wrote a post about some of the things I learned last year. You can read it here:
Why Consistency is important
Consistency is important because it helps us develop routines and build momentum.
I know that with consistency I can form good habits that will make me more productive and successful no matter what goals I set. Or even despite how many goals I set this year.
“Small disciplines repeated with consistency every day lead to great achievements gained slowly over time.”
John Maxell
12 Steps to maintaining consistency
- Create specific and realistic goals
- Create a schedule for yourself
- Place reminders around your home and workspace
- Make commitments only if you can keep them
- Reward yourself when you make achievements towards your goals
- Keep going even if you make a mistake or fall short
- Take breaks if you need to recharge
- Stay motivated even when you don’t feel like it
- Hold yourself accountable
- Set boundaries that will help you succeed
- Refrain from negative thinking
- Strengthen your willpower and keep going
What is your word of the year?
How many of you are going to join me this year and pick a word of the year?
Are you ready to make a change in 2021? I truly believe that choosing a word of the year is better than committing to a New Year’s resolution that you will more than likely fail at achieving before the end of the month.
So, I’m challenging you to pick a word of the year for 2021 because it might just be what you need to help bring focus and clarity to your life.
If you are struggling to pick a word for this year, I have the perfect post that will help guide you on how to choose your word of the year.
Check out Mountain Modern Life’s 5 Tips for Choosing your Word of the Year.
Once you decide on a word please share with me in the comments your word of the year and why you decided on this word. I am looking forward to reading your response.

Nice post! But if I were to choose, I think mine would be “go”. Because for me I need to go forward and forward and do things that I love to do without being held back by anxiety. Thank you for sharing this 🙂
bloglifewitherica
Fiona,
I hope that you will let go of those anxieties holding you back this year. You are already starting off the year right by not looking back and actually realizing that you have to go and move forward.

I am not sad to say goodbye to 2020..
Consistency is such a great theme to have and having a word of the year makes so much more sense than trying to come up with resolutions
If I were to pick a word of the year for 2021….. it would be Growth

Beaton,
Growth seems to be a popular word this year. I love it! No one wants to remain the same, we have to grow. You selected a great word!

Love this post! 🥰 I think my word for the year will be “Growth”. I feel like I still have so much more to learn and to experience, considering where I am and what my age is, growth will be very helpful for me to be the person I want to become a couple of years from now. This is such a great idea! Will surely try this one. Thanks so much for sharing! xx

Hi Elle,
Thank you for reading. I hope to continue to grow this year with my blog. No matter how many years I have been blogging there is always room for growth and always something new to learn.

What a great word to pick! Consistency is key in succeeding in almost anything. My word for the year is an Afrikaans word ‘welgeluksalig’ – it basically means being happy with what you have and finding joy in the little things.
All the best, Michelle (michellesclutterbox.com)

Michelle,
I love your word and the meaning behind it. For this year I also want to be happy and grateful for all that I have. Finding joy in the little things is so important, especially in the world of consumerism.

bloglifewitherica
Emily,
Thank you for reading! Give it a try this year. Set a goal and whatever that goal is turn it into a word for the year. It’s a nice reminder.

Great post Erica! I actually picked 5 words for this year, and consistency was one of them! I think focus might be my main word though. I have so many ideas and things I want to work on!
bloglifewitherica
Clarissa,
Focus is a great word! This year I will be focusing on my blog more. Even though it’s something I enjoy and consider a hobby. It is very much a business for me also, it’s my brand. So it’s something I have to show up for daily. That’s where consistency will come in to play for me.
I hope you also have a successful year!

Ooh! I love this so much! I’ve never had a word of the year but this is super inspiring. I’d say my word of the year is persistent! Being a content creator is sooo tough and there are low periods especially with all the social media algorithms changing so much! Here’s to 2021! xo
bloglifewitherica
Lynn,
I love your word! I hope to also be more persistent in my blogging business. One social media platform that I will be working hard on this is Pinterest. And yes, the algorithms do change so much.
Wishing you success all 2021!

2020 was definitely disastrous haha. I hope 2021 is great!! Happy New Year🥳
bloglifewitherica
Maria,
I keep telling everyone that 2020 feels like an utterly bad dream! It’s like we were living in some bad movie. Check out Death to 2020 on Netflix if you haven’t already. It was so good!
I hope 2021 brings you health, wealth, and success!

This is such a great idea. My word would be uniqueness. I want to set goals around this that will enable me to do the things that make me happy and stop comparing myself to others.
bloglifewitherica
Kelly,
I love your choice of word. I hope it means something to you that I think you are one of the most unique bloggers I know. You are a badass that knows a lot of history surrounding the first and second world wars. And as a history nerd I really enjoy reading your blog posts. I am so inspired by your knowledge that you share and it makes me proud to see a woman sharing so much history surrounding the wars. It’s a nice change since most blogs I have come across have been from men and their perspectives.
I’m not speaking as a feminist but I hope you get my point. 🙂
As you continue throughout this to set goals that will make you happy and prevent you from comparing yourself to others I am wishing you all the success.
I even wrote a post about why you should Stop Comparing Yourself to Others and 3 Important Reasons Why.
Check it out if you have a chance!
